Repair and overhaul cylinders

We are ideally equipped for processing large cylinders. Honing pipes up to 14 meters in length is no problem for us.

Re-manufacture damaged pipes and chrome-plated rods.

If it is no longer possible to overhaul the components, we can manufacture a new cylinder barrel or chrome-plated rod.

Repair technology

  • The cylinder is dismantled, all components are cleaned and checked for damage.
  • The cylinder barrel is honed.
  • Damage to the chrome coating is repaired and polished.
  • The cylinder is fitted with new gaskets and fresh oil.
  • The cylinder is tested and pressure-tested on the test bench.
  • If the cylinder is damaged, we manufacture a new tube or rod.
  • The locking mechanism is also overhauled on telematics cylinders.

After the repair, the cylinder is run on the test bench and its function checked.
The cylinder is pressurized for an extended period of time. In this way, the new seals and valves are loaded and tested.

What does a hydraulic cylinder repair involve?

Köhler dismantles the cylinder, cleans and inspects all components, hones the cylinder tube up to 14 m in length, repairs and polishes the chrome plating, and reassembles the cylinder with new seals and fresh oil. If a component can no longer be reconditioned, the tube or rod is manufactured anew. Since 1970, more than 5,000 cylinders have been repaired.

How is the repair tested?

After the repair, the cylinder is run on the test bench: bled, function-checked and pressure-tested over an extended period so that the new seals and valves are loaded and verified.

Repair or replace a cylinder?

Reconditioning is often cheaper and faster. For urgent cases, Köhler keeps many crane cylinders in stock as exchange units, including for Liebherr, Demag, Tadano-Faun and Grove mobile cranes.

Do you also repair large or special cylinders?

 Yes. The workshop is equipped for large cylinders, with honing possible up to 14 m in length. The locking unit on Telematik cylinders is also overhauled.
