Frequently Asked Questions

Which steel structural components on cranes and construction machinery does Köhler repair?

Köhler repairs load-bearing steel structural components, including booms, excavator sticks, excavator arms, adjustable booms, long-front booms, lifting frames, and frames. Depending on the damage, repairs are carried out through straightening or partial replacement. Since 1970, over 1,000 excavator booms, arms, and frames have been repaired.

Who is authorized to repair load-bearing steel structural components, and why is certification important?

Load-bearing components are safety-critical and must be repaired in a facility with certified welding qualifications. Köhler holds the “Full Certificate of Competence” in accordance with ISO 3834-2, is certified to ISO 9001, and is authorized to work with steel grades up to StE 1100. The welding procedures are tested by SLV Mannheim, and a certified welding engineer plans and supervises every repair.

How is the safety of the repaired component verified?

The work is supervised by a welding engineer, and welds in tension zones are additionally inspected using X-rays. An inspection report is prepared for each repair. This ensures that the component can be safely returned to service with verifiable documentation and that it complies with legal requirements.

Does Köhler also manufacture new parts when a repair is no longer possible?

Yes. If a component can no longer be repaired, Köhler manufactures a new one—for example, boom tubes or boom half-shells—using its own 600-metric-ton press. The company uses raw materials from leading manufacturers that come with test certificates.
